Your Hobbies | Dee the Lego Lady
Dee loves building Lego.
She estimates she has built around 60 sets over the past four years.
Her hobby started when one of her sons bought her a simple Lego set to try out after her husband died.
It kept her entertained for hours so he kept up the ante and now she is building complex structures with thousands of pieces.
Her living room and bedroom are full of completed structures, as she jokes: “I don’t know where I am going to put my next set.”
In fact, her Lego pieces are quite the talk of South Ribble, as anyone who visits, often refer to her as ‘The Lego Lady.’
Dee said: “My husband died four years ago and my son wanted me to find something to do, especially as I am very limited in a wheelchair. So he sent me some Lego as he has always liked Lego. It was a simple one to see if I could do it and I could, so he keeps sending me sets for my birthday and Christmas.
“The first ones I did were an Easter bunny, a bouquet of flowers and a fish tank. Then they got harder and harder. My favourite one has to be the jazz quartet, as I love jazz music. The typewriter is also special, as I used to be a medical secretary. Everyone always thinks it is real as it has ribbon and keys. I also love the tree house. It was difficult to do but shows how versatile Lego can be.”
Some of the other sets include a street of shops, a cinema and barbers, which include lights.
Dee, 88, has also completed the Tower Bridge, which has around 2,500 pieces, a Harry Potter train, the Statue of Liberty and the Ghostbusters car.
The most recent one which she got for her birthday was a Dungeons and Dragons set, with 3,750 pieces.
She added: “I like the challenge of putting it all together. It takes my mind off the pain I have sometimes. If anyone is looking for a hobby to do at home, I would recommend Lego.”
