Tenant support | Struggling with debt?

With the rising cost of living, we understand how easy it is to fall into debt.

This is how tenant Aisha (not her real name) found solutions through our free, independent Tenant Support and Wellbeing Service.

Aisha, who is a shop assistant, has accumulated significant debt over the past couple of years due to unexpected pet medical bills and car repairs. She was struggling to keep up with bills and credit card payments, often using one line of credit to pay off another.

The constant worry about debt was affecting her mental health, causing anxiety and sleepless nights.

The call

Aisha spoke to James, a support counsellor and trained advisor with considerable experience in providing emotional assistance and connecting people with resources for financial support and debt manage.

Aisha told James that she was feeling overwhelmed and every time she felt she had a handle on things, something else came up.

She added she didn’t know where to start and was worried about the consequences of missing payments.

James talked about getting help from a free debt advice service who could help create an action plan.

He gave this advice: “Many non-profit organisations offer support without any fees. They can help you set up a debt repayment plan, often with lower interest rates, or even discuss debt consolidation options. Sometimes, just knowing that you have someone working with you can make the situation feel more manageable.

“Another thing that can help is creating a small budget, just to see where your money is going. Sometimes, just identifying areas where you might save even a little can give you more control.

“Taking it step-by-step can really make a difference.”

What happened next?

Aisha contacted a debt advice service, who helped her set up a debt repayment plan. She also worked out a basic budget, which helped her limit her spending and prepare for unexpected expenditures.

Aisha said: “I feel understood, reducing the shame and isolation that is often associated with debt. I now have a clear path forward and feel more in control.”
