Tenant support | Dealing with noisy neighbours

We understand that your home is your sanctuary and if you are struggling to find peace due to noisy neighbours, it can cause you extra stress.

Read how Tom* (not his real name), reached out to our tenant support and wellbeing service Life & Progress to find ways of coping.

Living next to a young family, Tom is frequently disturbed by general household noise late into the night.

This ongoing disturbance has disrupted his sleep and affected his ability to focus at work. Despite trying to talk with his neighbours and reporting the issue, little has changed.

The call

Tom spoke to Anna, who is an emotional counsellor with training in managing stress and providing resources to people in challenging situations.

Tom told Anna that he felt trapped and had no control over his living environment. He said he no longer felt comfortable or relaxed in his own home.

He told Anna: “The noise goes on all hours, and I’m not sleeping well. It’s getting to the point where I’m dreading coming home.”

Anna talked through some practical noise-cancelling solutions, such as headphones or sound therapy, combined with stress-relieving activities to help Tom manage his environment more effectively in the short term.

She also talked about getting in touch with someone who could help navigate the issue with the authorities for a more positive long-term solution.

What happened next?

Tom agreed to try out the sound therapy, establish a relaxation routine, and to speak with the information specialist for guidance.

He said: “Knowing I am able to speak to someone to help me mediate with my neighbour and take pro-active steps, I feel more empowered to achieve a long-term solution. The other techniques I was offered helped to reduce my stress.”
