This month, Life & Progress gives us advice on staying healthy during flu season.
With the cold comes the flu season too, with most of us feeling the bunged-up sinuses, sneezing, and runny noses. Even though the days of the pandemic are mostly behind us, it's important we stay proactive in dealing with the flu season.
Beyond the physical discomfort, the flu can be profoundly inconvenient, disrupting our routines and upsetting our days. More importantly, it can also affect our mental health.
The fatigue and discomfort of the flu can lead to feelings of frustration, helplessness, and stress.
By recognising the interconnection between the flu and our mental health, it becomes more important to make sure we're proactive in avoiding catching anything.
The flu spreads in a very similar way to COVID-19, released into the air when someone sneezes, coughs or even talks. On top of that, the flu can survive on surfaces and remain contagious.
One of the silver linings of the pandemic is that we're all now pretty much experts on avoiding something like COVID, making sure we're washing our hands, covering our coughs and sneezes, and most importantly, getting vaccinated.
If you find yourself battling the flu, there are essential steps to take for managing the illness and curbing its spread.
Firstly, it's crucial to isolate yourself and avoid contact with others to prevent transmission.
Over-the-counter medications can help alleviate symptoms, but hydration is key, so ensure you drink plenty of fluids and maintain a nutritious diet to support your immune system.
On the mental side of things, make sure to practice self-compassion and take rest without feeling guilty for taking a break.
Engage in activities that bring comfort or relaxation too.
Remember, your Tenant Support & Wellbeing Service is here if you need it and you're feeling overwhelmed.
